Freight forwarders report that containers in northern China are becoming increasingly difficult to obtain. This trend is mainly attributed to unusually strong demand in the market and reduced ship capacity due to the Red Sea crisis, which in turn caused a shortage of ships and containers.

Hans-Henrik Nielson, Global Development Director of CargoGulf, made it clear: "The shortage of 40-foot high containers in China is very serious, and we are facing the dilemma of supply depletion." He further explained: "Containers arrive at ports in China, Malaysia (or Singapore) It is no exaggeration to say that this frequent port hopping and port congestion has caused great trouble for equipment planning.”

Ligentia also confirmed the shortage, noting: "Empty container inventories, especially in North China, are very tight and change every day based on ship arrivals and empty container unloading." The company specifically mentioned that in Shanghai Port, "Almost all carriers are facing shortages of empty containers, especially CMA and ANL." In addition, due to port congestion, the waiting time of ships at the port has been extended to 3 to 14 days, causing flight delays to become the norm.

Ligentia also observed that in multiple Chinese ports, such as Maersk and Hapag-Lloyd in Yantian Port, COSCO Shipping Lines, HMM, Hapag-Lloyd and MSC in Ningbo Port, Hapag-Lloyd and Maersk in Tianjin Port, and COSCO Shipping Lines and CMA CGM are at the port of Qingdao, and carriers are struggling to acquire containers. However, the situation at Xiamen Port is relatively good, with sufficient supply of containers.

The current market remains strong and carriers are becoming more selective in bookings. Some shippers are seeking additional offers from carriers to prepare for a possible glut of freight volume in the coming months. At the same time, carriers have announced blank sailing plans for June, which will result in significant capacity reductions of 15-20%, further exacerbating weekly capacity fluctuations.
