On December 30, Maersk confirmed that the ship "MAERSK HANGZHOU" was attacked while passing through the Bab el-Mandeb Strait from Singapore to Port Suez, Egypt. Maersk once again announced the suspension of Red Sea voyages.

The "MAERSK HANGZHOU" ship that was attacked this time was one of the ships returning to the Red Sea and Suez Canal routes. Affected by this, Maersk announced on December 31, 2023 that it would suspend ships crossing the Red Sea for 48 hours.

Maersk said it is currently working to establish the full circumstances of the incident and is in close dialogue with Operation Prosperity Guardian (OPG) and relevant authorities to assess the security level in the area.

It is understood that this is the 23rd attack on international shipping by the Houthi armed forces since November 19.

For freight forwarders and cargo owners, repeated changes in the routes of Maersk ships will cause more cargo delay time.

And for ships that always circumnavigate the Cape of Good Hope, there is also the additional delays that such a large number of ships may face at African ports need to be considered.

Faced with the current Red Sea situation, it is an option to use intermodal transport or China-Europe freight trains as alternatives for some goods. However, if the Red Sea shipping situation continues, the business volume of China-Europe trains is expected to be saturated soon.
