MSC responds to the incident of seizure of "MSC Aries"!
On April 17, MSC Mediterranean Shipping’s official website released an updated announcement regarding the seizure of the “MSC Aries” ship. The announcement stated that many people were worried and shocked by the serious incident that occurred on the morning of Saturday, April 13, 2024, involving the seizure of the "MSC Aries" in the Strait of Hormuz.
MSC said that unfortunately, due to the extremely sensitive and unstable situation it is currently facing, it can only provide the following information about the situation at this time:
- On April 13, the MSC Aries was seized by Iranian authorities while transiting international waters in the Strait of Hormuz;
- "MSC Aries" is owned by Gortal Shipping Inc. and chartered by MSC;
- The 25 crew members are safe and are in discussions with the Iranian authorities to secure their early release;
- MSC is also in discussions with Iranian authorities to allow the cargo to be unloaded;
- MSC will continue to provide uninterrupted scheduled services on Himalaya Express and all other services operating in the region.
On the 13th local time, Iran's Tasnim News Agency reported that Iran's Islamic Revolutionary Guard Navy seized an Israeli-related cargo ship near the Strait of Hormuz. The Yitong News Agency reported that the ship is currently heading to Iranian waters.
It is reported that the cargo ship named "MSC Aries" flies the Portuguese flag and is related to the London-based company "Zodiac Maritime", whose owner is an Israeli named "Eyal Ofer".
It is understood that the detained container ship "MSC Aries", IMO: 9857169, was built in 2020, flies the Portuguese flag, and has a transport capacity of 15,000TEU. The ship was chartered and operated by MSC. The ship was traveling from Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates to Navashiva, India. It was airborne and detained by Iran when it passed near the Strait of Hormuz.
