According to the announcement of the U.S. Department of the Treasury, the bulk carriers "Alara", "Ula", and "Ipsala" are related to the previously sanctioned Russian shipping company Pola Raiz (also known as "Pola Rise"). In the Feb. 24 sanctions, the company and its fleet of 22 general cargo ships were sanctioned by the United States for working on trade between Russia and Turkey and transporting materials to construction sites in the Arctic.
The remaining 16 ships are related to the Russian shipping company Joint Stock Company State Transportation Leasing Company, which was sanctioned in April 2022.
