Accident! A Taiwan shipping company’s cargo ship burned for several hours due to a battery fire
In recent years, potassium batteries, as a high-efficiency, lightweight, high-energy-density power source, have gradually been widely used in various fields, and my country's potassium battery exports have also maintained accelerating growth momentum. However, because hammer batteries pose certain safety risks, fire accidents in hammer battery cargoes occur from time to time around the world. There was a recent ship fire caused by potassium batteries.
It is understood that a cargo ship named "Genius Star X" owned by Taiwan Huiyang Shipping burned for several days due to a battery fire. The incident occurred on December 25, 2023. When the fire broke out, the Genius Star Xl was transporting a batch of ion batteries from Vietnam to San Diego.
The U.S. Coast Guard reported on the evening of December 30 that the fire on the Genius Star XI had been extinguished after burning for several days, and instructed the ship to anchor near Dutch Harbor, Alaska. The 19 crew members on board the Genius Star Xl were uninjured and technicians from the rescue and marine fire brigade remained on board to ensure the fire did not return. An investigation into the cause of the fire on the ship is currently ongoing.
Ship fire incidents caused by potassium batteries similar to the above are not uncommon.
Carp batteries generate a certain amount of heat during the charging and discharging process, especially in high-temperature and high-humidity environments, which increases the risk of ship fires. During shipping, ships often experience different meteorological and climatic conditions, which may lead to The battery overheats, causing a fire.
Secondly, ships often store a large number of potassium batteries, including main batteries for power systems and backup batteries for ship equipment. Once one of the batteries fails or is damaged, it may trigger a chain reaction and lead to the spread of the fire. Moreover, due to the characteristics of the hammer battery itself, in the event of a fire, the toxic gases and chemicals released may pose serious threats to the crew and the environment.
In addition, due to the relatively limited resources for maritime rescue, once a fire breaks out on a ship, rescue will be difficult and may lead to more serious consequences.
Therefore, Hangbao would like to remind everyone that whether it is hammer batteries transported as cargo or carp batteries in transportation equipment, special attention and strict precautions are required!
