The European Central Bank may take some comfort from data showing that producer prices in the euro zone fell for the seventh straight month in July and fell sharply from a year earlier.
The monthly decline in the PPI index in the euro area in July was mainly due to a 1.2% drop in prices of intermediate products such as steel, sugar or timber, and a 0.9% drop in energy costs. Prices of capital goods (such as machinery, tools or buildings) and consumer durables rose 0.2 percent, while non-durable consumer goods rose 0.1 percent.
In addition, energy costs have fallen sharply year-on-year, and prices of intermediate products have also fallen. Prices of capital, durable goods and nondurable goods all rose by at least 4%, although those price increases have been steadily slowing since the end of 2022.
